Not gonna lie, things have been kinda rough around the house and I haven't felt like doing much of anything. A HUGE thank you to The Magnificent Bivens Sisters for pulling me out of my funk and contributing to a series of firsts today!
First time I've ever:
Run 7 miles (It's just a loop she said, 5 miles at the most she said)
Run through Mountain Brook (Hills, Hills, Hills)
Run part of the Jemison Trail (I've REALLY been wanting to do that!)
Rolled my ankle (OUCH)
Noticed sweat/salt crusted on my forehead (Thanks for the heads up ladies - so attractive)
Taken a selfie!!

May I walk in your footsteps . . .
Today we laid to rest the most amazing man I have ever known. He was an inspiration and a role model to all who knew him. The patriarch of the family and a true Southern Gentleman in every way. Dearest Paw, thank you for all that you have taught me. May my life be a reflection of your guiding grace.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there should be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.

And sometimes we don't race.
Wylie Pierson Johnson
November 2, 2013He was married to the love of his life, Eula Lurene “Dolly” Hall Johnson for 50 years. They raised three children, Barbara Lurene, Melanie Fay, and Wylie Benjamin.
Mr. Johnson was very active in professional and civic activities and contributed articles to professional journals. His activities included having been President of the Vestavia Exchange Club; President of the Richard Montgomery Chapter and the Alabama State Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution; a Mason and member of Zamora Shrine Temple; member of the Young Men’s Business Club of Birmingham; member of the Birmingham Engineer’s Club; member of the Tuskegee Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow); and member of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery. He established the Seth Johnson Endowment for the Economics Department of Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) and received the AUM School of Business 1998-1999 Outstanding Business Leadership Award.
He was an avid Auburn fan and recently enjoyed watching Auburn beat Texas A&M.
Most important, however, was his love of family. Mr. Johnson organized and attended family reunions throughout the country, spent years compiling genealogical information, and wrote three books on genealogy, Solomon Johnson: 1601-1690 His Descendants & Some Allied Families, Neva Kate Carmichael Johnson: 1880-1952 Her Family and Ancestry, and Eula Lurene Hall Johnson: 1922-1997 Her Family and Ancestry. Many of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have tales of cross-country trips with “Paw” searching through libraries and graveyards and listening to distant relatives tell jocose anecdotes and family tales.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Lurene Hall Johnson. He is survived by his children, Barbara Lurene Hill (James), children Melanie Anne Ryan (Tim), John Derek Hill, James Daniel Hill (Amandiy), and Jeffrey Adam Hill (Ashley); Melanie Fay Johnson, children Kellet Carmichel May (Joshua), Edward Seth Atkinson (Connie), and Wylie Scott Atkinson (Gia); and Wylie Benjamin Johnson (Jessica), children Benjamin Seth Johnson (Rebecca), Erin Carmichael Millson (Jared), Caroline Haddox Johnson, and Spencer Henry Johnson; his great grandchildren, Timothy Graham Ryan (Christina), Rebecca Anne Ryan, Sarah Elizabeth Hill, John Taylor Hill, Elizabeth Margaret Hill, Jeffrey Adam Hill, Jr., Sally Lurene Hill, Kaylin Ashley Hill, Chloe Elizabeth Zeepuga Hill, Eythan Tialen Hill, Pierson Reece Atkinson, Kimberlea Fay Atkinson, Lillian Carmichael May, Lucia Carmichael May, Hazel Jo Millson.
Visitation will be held at Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery, Alabama, on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with services at 11:00. His seven grandsons will serve as pallbearers: John Derek Hill, Edward Seth Atkinson, James Daniel Hill, Jeffrey Adam Hill, Wylie Scott Atkinson, Benjamin Seth Johnson, and Spencer Henry Johnson.

Rick Bragg
This has absolutely nothing to do with running but I am too excited not to share. Last night, I met Rick Bragg y'all!! He is an absolutely lovely person; humble, shy, slightly awkward, and amazingly engaging. He is by far my favorite Southern Author. I am ecstatic every month when the new issue of Southern Living arrives and there he is - last page - humorous, poignant, and usually a bit self deprecating - the Pulitzer Prize winner's Artist in Residence piece. It is a special treat I save for when everyone is asleep and my house is totally quiet. I make a cup of tea or hot chocolate and sit in my favorite chair in the living room and absorb every single letter. The man is a wordsmith and, in this day and age, such a talent is a rare and magical find. Thank you, Mr. Bragg. Thank you.

Couple of Days Off
The Vulcan 10 K is just a mere 9 days away! Gia, Monica Mize, and I are doing a practice run of the course on Saturday. And if that wasn't incentive enough, Monica is expecting Baby Mize to arrive in March. So if she can do it . . . right? My ankle is still a little tender and inflamed so I am going to rest up today and tomorrow. I can't wait to get back into running shoes and play with the girls Saturday!

H20, Mg and K (water, magnesium and potassium)
The weather outside is wonderful for running. Cool, dry, and the slightest bit nippy on the tip of my nose. Running still hurts though- ankle and calves. As per the advice of Dr. Emily, there is more water and there are more tomatoes in my diet (I am still searching for a 6 foot banana). Now, my goal is to find Compression Socks. I'm pretty upbeat about the fact that in over 5 months of training this is the first issue I've had. Not too shabby, I'd say! Mr. May brought home the registration form for the Mercedes Half Marathon to me last night. It is complete and on the way back to Mercedes. I'm not quite sure how to feel. Ecstatic? Terrified? Regardless, Autumn has arrived in The South, she is most welcomed and, I hope she stays awhile.

Super Hero Saturday - Heather Kendrick
There is an amazing group of friends that meet every Sunday
to have dinner together. This has been going on for years and it has given me
the opportunity to get to know Heather Kendrick. She has one of those Zen souls that, whenever
she walks into a room, seems to create a calm euphoria for everyone. And, you
know it, SHE RUNS! Heather has unbelievable internal motivation, takes
great care of herself, eats healthy, cross trains with what looks like an fantastically
supportive group of people and SHE JUST
FINISHED HER FIRST MARATHON!! Chicago 2013. Heather, you are my hero!

Super Hero Saturday - Kate May (soon to be Zebrowski)
Remember that whole "Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot when it comes to in-laws" thing?? Mr. May's sister Kate is the most awesom-est ever! When I started my Couch to 5K training I knew that I'd finish the plan about the same time Mr. May and I were on the annual family summer vacation back to his home state. In comes Kate! Kate has always been an extremely active person. She sails, runs, swims, bikes, teaches a spin class and is drop dead gorgeous!! Yes, she is total Kellet Idol material! Kate could not have been more enthusiastic when I asked if she'd run a 5K with me if I could find one happening while we were visiting. "Run Like the Dickens" in Sturbridge, Massachusetts was the first 5K I finished. I didn't run the entire thing, but I crossed the Finish Line. And right beside me - when she wasn't behind me, literally pushing me along - was Kate. This weekend we are back in Rhode Island to celebrate Kate's wedding to Alec (another unbelievably active and awesome person in our lives). We couldn't be happier for the two of you - Best Wishes and Congratulations!

Heading to The Ocean State for what I know will be one of the most incredible weddings - EVER!
(We love Kate & Alec!)
Fun Fact: Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (official name) was the first of the Thirteen Colonies to declare independence from British Rule - THE original rebels!
And, it is the home state of Mr. May!

Super Hero Saturday - Joshua May
Mr. May took me shopping for running clothes. Saint. I am
now the proud owner of pieces for the cooler weather; (Didn’t need them today! Who ordered July in October anyway?) Not only that, but every
morning before he leaves for work he wishes me a good run and asks me how it
went when he gets home. He brings the girls out to my races and makes sure they are there to
cheer me on. That plus the Pumpkin Spice Latte he bought me this morning puts
him pretty darn high on my list! Running is hard and isn’t always fun. Without
my behind the scenes partner, I’d never have gotten past Couch to 5K- week 1,
day 1. Thank you Sweetheart, I love you!
YOU.
TOTALLY. ROCK.

Shorts? Pants? Shirt? Jacket?
There is something about buying new running clothes that
terrifies me. I run six days a week and wear the same (washed every night)
thing each time. Umbro soccer shorts I’ve had since high school and an Old Navy
tank top I bought when I brought Mini-Li home from the hospital as a newborn. What
is my deal? Shoes, now that is a different story. I know better and had the
fine folks at Trak Shak hook me up with the perfect pair of shoes. No back,
leg, knee, ankle, etc. injuries from the wrong pair of runners on these feet!
But, running clothes intimidate me. Wicking this – cotton that – no cotton
here - NASA approved space age there. And, they can be wicked expensive, especially if what you buy turns out
to be uncomfortable. Like the shorts I bought to celebrate my first 5K.
Admittedly, I made a mistake never wearing them before the race...paid for
that for days!! So, I am accepting volunteers as a shopping companion to grab
some cooler weather gear. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

My "W" is for Weight
Kinsey Millhone is the fictional protagonist of Sue Grafton’s
alphabet series mysteries. Books that I have been enjoying since my card worked
in the grown up section of the library. Kinsey is a smart, no nonsense, yet slightly flawed
private investigator. And, she runs! She
runs 3 miles a day. Another (major)
reason I started running was to get back to pre-baby weight. I gained 73lbs with Mini-Li and 67lbs with
Mini-Lu. Whatever “they” say, it has NOT my experience
that baby weight is easier to lose than “normal” weight … AT ALL! Who are "they" anyway? I am still chucking a little extra
around and Mini-Lu was two in June. So, I am upping the ante on my maintenance
runs. Rather than setting my timer for 30 minutes, I am going to eat 5K’s for
breakfast. Here is to 3.1 miles and, to Kinsey! Go the distance!

Super Hero Saturday - Daren Wendell
If you haven’t heard about or read about Daren Wendell –
you are SO missing out! Mr. May met this AMAZING man while they were both
hiking the AT (Appalachian Trail for all of us non hikers) and I had the great
honor and pleasure of being introduced when Daren swung through Birmingham.
Daren has a commitment to God, philanthropy, and health like no person I have
ever known. I can only hope to be him “when I grow up”. If you Google Daren you
will not believe everything he has accomplished in the name of water. Wait, what?
WATER. Yes – Daren has devoted his life to walking, swimming, cycling, and running all to bring attention to the
need for safe drinking water around the globe. Daren is the Co-Founder and
Executive Director of activewater – you
can find their website at activewater.org.
And - this will flip your lid - Daren is running 100 marathons in 100
days. Mmmm hmmm . . . you read that
right, 100 Marathons in 100 Days
to help Africa. (see why he is my Hero??) You have GOT to check all of the
details out at www.rundarenrun.com Please help him reach his goal!

Super Hero Saturday - Gia Bivens Atkinson
My sister-in-law wears Wonder Woman bracelets. How wicked
awesome is that? I am blessed with a truly fantastic family and, I won the mega
millions lottery jackpot when it comes to in-laws! My brother’s wife, Gia, is
one of the coolest chicks I know. When I first started this endeavor, she’d
drive to my house at 5:30am to cross train with me. Then, we’d “telercise” by
working out together over the phone, being accountable. Talk about a motivator!
At least twice a week Gia will message me with a “PIAP” – Proof I’m Awesome
Picture…see Wordless Wednesday. These
quick snapshots of her –Wondertwin Powers Activate – matching heart monitor can
send me out to run faster than a speeding bullet. Gia ran the “Save the O’s” 5K with
me. She roped me in with her golden
lasso and we are registered for the Vulcan 10K. She is my Super Hero!

The importance of sleep . . .
Three relatively sleepless nights into
Mr. May’s two week business trip to the Fatherland and my run feels like the
dream where you are trying to get away from the monster but your legs are stuck
in peanut butter. (Not like the dream where you see yourself standing in
sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand women screaming and throwing
little pickles at you) While my night starts out with everyone tucked into
their own little beds, it ends up with MiniLi and MiniLu in my bed while I take
sanctuary on the couch. That is until last night, when MiniLu even managed to
find me there - at 3:00am. And while I should have gone much further much
faster. It's okay, though, I know what the problem is. It's obviously the drag
coefficient. Still, no matter how hard is was, How slow or sluggish, I RAN! I
got up this morning, laced my shoes, and hit the trail. My run today?
Real Genius. (And no, my mother does not put license plates in my underwear.)

Today is Tuesday
Currently I like to run on a little path near my house. The
Homewood Shades Creek Greenway. I run early, really really early, when I can. I
love to start on the path when it is pitch black dark and run as the sun rises.
It never ceases to amaze and impress me all of the other people I run (and
walk) with on that trail. They are there with me, every size, every shape, and every
age – inspiring. And each of them has a smile, wave, nod, or breathless “hey”
(it is the South, after all). This morning even came with a safety shout out –
“Careful, there is water under the car bridge!” While my morning companions are
nameless, to me, they are never faceless!

Why do I run?
I run for my girls. Number one, first and for most, I run for the precious little miracles that God has given me. Exercise was never a part of my life when I was a child. My brothers played soccer and I was on a t-ball team called The Bunnies. (Softball was more about French braids with blue and yellow ribbons than a real sport.) Then there was a brief sojourn into the precursor to modern day Prancercizing with Mama to a record called "Go You Chicken Fat ... Go Away." My daughters deserve better. I am here to make sure they have two parents who are HEALTHY!! Parents who eat right and are in shape. That starts with me. So, join me on my journey to running a marathon. Come on - Go Big or Go Home, right??
