Rick Bragg

This has absolutely nothing to do with running but I am too excited not to share. Last night, I met Rick Bragg y'all!! He is an absolutely lovely person; humble, shy, slightly awkward, and amazingly engaging. He is by far my favorite Southern Author. I am ecstatic every month when the new issue of  Southern Living arrives and there he is - last page -  humorous, poignant, and usually a bit self deprecating - the Pulitzer Prize winner's Artist in Residence piece. It is a special treat I save for when everyone is asleep and my house is totally quiet. I make a cup of tea or hot chocolate and sit in my favorite chair in the living room and absorb every single letter. The man is a wordsmith and, in this day and age, such a talent is a rare and magical find. Thank you, Mr. Bragg. Thank you.

Couple of Days Off

The Vulcan 10 K is just a mere 9 days away! Gia, Monica Mize, and I are doing a practice run of the course on Saturday. And if that wasn't incentive enough, Monica is expecting Baby Mize to arrive in March. So if she can do it . . . right? My ankle is still a little tender and inflamed so I am going to rest up today and tomorrow. I can't wait to get back into running shoes and play with the girls Saturday!

H20, Mg and K (water, magnesium and potassium)

The weather outside is wonderful for running. Cool, dry, and the slightest bit nippy on the tip of my nose. Running still hurts though- ankle and calves. As per the advice of  Dr. Emily, there is more water and there are more tomatoes in my diet (I am still searching for a 6 foot banana). Now, my goal is to find Compression Socks. I'm pretty upbeat about the fact that in over 5 months of training this is the first issue I've had. Not too shabby, I'd say!  Mr. May brought home the registration form for the Mercedes Half Marathon to me last night. It is complete and on the way back to Mercedes. I'm not quite sure how to feel. Ecstatic? Terrified? Regardless, Autumn has arrived in The South, she is most welcomed and, I hope she stays awhile.

Motivational Monday

"Running is not about building strength and wearing it like a fashion statement.

It is about finding strength and measuring yourself every single day"

Super Hero Saturday - Heather Kendrick

There is an amazing group of friends that meet every Sunday to have dinner together. This has been going on for years and it has given me the opportunity to get to know Heather Kendrick.  She has one of those Zen souls that, whenever she walks into a room, seems to create a calm euphoria for everyone. And, you know it, SHE RUNS! Heather has unbelievable internal motivation, takes great care of herself, eats healthy, cross trains with what looks like an fantastically supportive group of people and  SHE JUST FINISHED HER FIRST MARATHON!! Chicago 2013. Heather, you are my hero!

Super Hero Saturday - Kate May (soon to be Zebrowski)

Remember that whole "Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot when it comes to in-laws" thing??  Mr. May's sister Kate is the most awesom-est ever! When I started my Couch to 5K training I knew that I'd finish the plan about the same time Mr. May and I were on the annual family summer vacation back to his home state. In comes Kate! Kate has always been an extremely active person. She sails, runs, swims, bikes, teaches a spin class and is drop dead gorgeous!!  Yes, she is total Kellet Idol material!  Kate could not have been more enthusiastic when I asked if she'd run a 5K with me if I could find one happening while we were visiting. "Run Like the Dickens" in Sturbridge, Massachusetts was the first 5K I finished. I didn't run the entire thing, but I crossed the Finish Line. And right beside me - when she wasn't behind me, literally pushing me along - was Kate. This weekend we are back in Rhode Island to celebrate Kate's wedding to Alec (another unbelievably active and awesome person in our lives). We couldn't be happier for the two of you - Best Wishes and Congratulations!

Time Out for Travel

Heading to The Ocean State for what I know will be one of the most incredible weddings - EVER!
(We love Kate & Alec!)
Fun Fact: Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (official name) was the first of the Thirteen Colonies to declare independence from British Rule - THE original rebels!
And, it is the home state of Mr. May!
Can't wait to get in a few good runs at the beach and hopefully see some Fabulous Fall Foliage!

The Animal Farm of Running

Every day is a good day when you run.
Some days are better than others.
Today - not one of those days. =)
Regardless, running is better than sleeping in a bed (with sheets) or drinking (to excess)

Super Hero Saturday - Joshua May

Mr. May took me shopping for running clothes. Saint. I am now the proud owner of pieces for the cooler weather; (Didn’t need them today! Who ordered July in October anyway?) Not only that, but every morning before he leaves for work he wishes me a good run and asks me how it went when he gets home. He brings the girls out to my races and makes sure they are there to cheer me on. That plus the Pumpkin Spice Latte he bought me this morning puts him pretty darn high on my list! Running is hard and isn’t always fun. Without my behind the scenes partner, I’d never have gotten past Couch to 5K- week 1, day 1.  Thank you Sweetheart, I love you!
YOU. TOTALLY. ROCK.

Shorts? Pants? Shirt? Jacket?

There is something about buying new running clothes that terrifies me. I run six days a week and wear the same (washed every night) thing each time. Umbro soccer shorts I’ve had since high school and an Old Navy tank top I bought when I brought Mini-Li home from the hospital as a newborn. What is my deal? Shoes, now that is a different story. I know better and had the fine folks at Trak Shak hook me up with the perfect pair of shoes. No back, leg, knee, ankle, etc. injuries from the wrong pair of runners on these feet! But, running clothes intimidate me. Wicking this – cotton that – no cotton here - NASA approved space age there. And, they can be wicked expensive, especially if what you buy turns out to be uncomfortable. Like the shorts I bought to celebrate my first 5K. Admittedly, I made a mistake never wearing them before the race...paid for that for days!! So, I am accepting volunteers as a shopping companion to grab some cooler weather gear. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

My "W" is for Weight

Kinsey Millhone is the fictional protagonist of Sue Grafton’s alphabet series mysteries. Books that I have been enjoying since my card worked in the grown up section of the library. Kinsey is a smart, no nonsense, yet slightly flawed private investigator.  And, she runs! She runs 3 miles a day.  Another (major) reason I started running was to get back to pre-baby weight.  I gained 73lbs with Mini-Li and 67lbs with Mini-Lu.  Whatever “they” say, it has NOT my experience that baby weight is easier to lose than “normal” weight … AT ALL! Who are "they" anyway?  I am still chucking a little extra around and Mini-Lu was two in June. So, I am upping the ante on my maintenance runs. Rather than setting my timer for 30 minutes, I am going to eat 5K’s for breakfast. Here is to 3.1 miles and, to Kinsey! Go the distance!
