Super Hero Saturday - Daren Wendell

If you haven’t heard about or read about Daren Wendell – you are SO missing out! Mr. May met this AMAZING man while they were both hiking the AT (Appalachian Trail for all of us non hikers) and I had the great honor and pleasure of being introduced when Daren swung through Birmingham. Daren has a commitment to God, philanthropy, and health like no person I have ever known. I can only hope to be him “when I grow up”. If you Google Daren you will not believe everything he has accomplished in the name of water. Wait, what? WATER. Yes – Daren has devoted his life to walking, swimming, cycling, and running all to bring attention to the need for safe drinking water around the globe. Daren is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of activewater – you can find their website at activewater.org.  And - this will flip your lid - Daren is running 100 marathons in 100 days.  Mmmm hmmm . . . you read that right, 100  Marathons in 100 Days to help Africa. (see why he is my Hero??) You have GOT to check all of the details out at www.rundarenrun.com  Please help him reach his goal!

Fantastic Friday

So just a quick - yippee - that I was able to get in a run this morning. And a thank you shout out to Betsy Garret for playing Carpool Mom to Mini-Li and Mini-Lu.  Mr. May returns tomorrow and then we'll be back on schedule. (Seriously missing Frozen Goat Friday, FYI!!)

Oh, and if you haven't yet heard about Canadian Meredith Fitzmaurice - read about her here - yes, I am TOTALLY jealous!

Grrrrr...

Sending extra kudos to all the single parents out there who can make a schedule work!  I am SO missing Mr. May – and not just because without him my running window is virtually non-existent.  I’ve missed today’s maintenance run. There will be no Frozen Goat reward tomorrow.

Super Hero Saturday - Gia Bivens Atkinson

My sister-in-law wears Wonder Woman bracelets. How wicked awesome is that? I am blessed with a truly fantastic family and, I won the mega millions lottery jackpot when it comes to in-laws! My brother’s wife, Gia, is one of the coolest chicks I know. When I first started this endeavor, she’d drive to my house at 5:30am to cross train with me. Then, we’d “telercise” by working out together over the phone, being accountable. Talk about a motivator! At least twice a week Gia will message me with a “PIAP” – Proof I’m Awesome Picture…see Wordless Wednesday. These quick snapshots of her –Wondertwin Powers Activate – matching heart monitor can send me out to run faster than a speeding bullet. Gia ran the “Save the O’s” 5K with me. She roped me in with her golden lasso and we are registered for the Vulcan 10K. She is my Super Hero!

The importance of sleep . . .

Three relatively sleepless nights into Mr. May’s two week business trip to the Fatherland and my run feels like the dream where you are trying to get away from the monster but your legs are stuck in peanut butter. (Not like the dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand women screaming and throwing little pickles at you) While my night starts out with everyone tucked into their own little beds, it ends up with MiniLi and MiniLu in my bed while I take sanctuary on the couch. That is until last night, when MiniLu even managed to find me there - at 3:00am. And while I should have gone much further much faster. It's okay, though, I know what the problem is. It's obviously the drag coefficient. Still, no matter how hard is was, How slow or sluggish, I RAN! I got up this morning, laced my shoes, and hit the trail. My run today? Real Genius. (And no, my mother does not put license plates in my underwear.)

Today is Tuesday

Currently I like to run on a little path near my house. The Homewood Shades Creek Greenway. I run early, really really early, when I can. I love to start on the path when it is pitch black dark and run as the sun rises. It never ceases to amaze and impress me all of the other people I run (and walk) with on that trail. They are there with me, every size, every shape, and every age – inspiring. And each of them has a smile, wave, nod, or breathless “hey” (it is the South, after all). This morning even came with a safety shout out – “Careful, there is water under the car bridge!” While my morning companions are nameless, to me,  they  are never faceless!

Why do I run?

I run for my girls. Number one, first and for most, I run for the precious little miracles that God has given me.  Exercise was never a part of my life when I was a child. My brothers played soccer and I was on a t-ball team called The Bunnies. (Softball was more about French braids with blue and yellow ribbons than a real sport.) Then there was a brief sojourn into the precursor to modern day Prancercizing with Mama to a record called "Go You Chicken Fat ... Go Away."  My daughters deserve better. I am here to make sure they have two parents who are HEALTHY!!  Parents who eat right and are in shape. That starts with me. So, join me on my journey to running a marathon.  Come on - Go Big or Go Home, right??
